CameraClub.Online: Revolutionising Camera Club Management

The problem

CameraClub.Online needed to build a comprehensive platform for managing camera clubs, while also migrating images and data from the closing foliopic.com within a two-month deadline.

Moonfive is a web development agency based in Leeds, specialising in custom online management systems. CameraClub.Online is a platform built to simplify how camera clubs run, for both administrators and members.

Client goals

The primary goal of CameraClub.Online was to build a comprehensive platform that streamlines the management of camera clubs, making it easier for administrators to organise club activities and for members to engage with the club’s content and events. It also needed to migrate images and data from existing foliopic.com websites, which were scheduled to close in just two months.

Key features

Overview of CameraClub.Online's key features

Member management

CameraClub.Online built a member management system that lets administrators add, edit, and remove members. Members can also update their own profiles and preferences, keeping information accurate and current.

Programme & events

The platform provides tools for scheduling and managing club events, meetings, and activities. Members can view the club’s calendar and register for upcoming events.

Club competitions

CameraClub.Online built a competition management system, so administrators can create and manage photography competitions while members submit entries online and judges evaluate and score them within the platform.

Member galleries

A gallery system lets members showcase their photography portfolios and albums, uploading, organising, and sharing images with the club community.

Committee tools

To simplify administrative tasks, CameraClub.Online built committee-specific tools, helping committee members collaborate and make decisions efficiently.

Blog

An integrated blog lets the club share news, photography tips, and other content with members and the wider photography community.

Technical implementation

CameraClub.Online used Laravel for the back end, for stability, security, and scalability, with Vue.js on the front end for a smooth, interactive user experience. This combination made it straightforward to keep developing and expanding features afterwards.

Migrating from Foliopic.com

One of the biggest challenges was migrating images and data from existing foliopic.com client websites, which were set to close in two months. The team built a systematic data migration plan that included:

  • Extracting images and data from foliopic.com websites.
  • Mapping and transforming the data to fit the new platform’s structure.
  • Ensuring data integrity during the transfer.
  • Building automated scripts to speed up the migration process.
  • Thoroughly testing the migrated data for accuracy and completeness.

Despite the tight timeline, CameraClub.Online migrated all necessary data and images without disruption to the clubs’ operations.

Results

Moonfive’s CameraClub.Online platform gives camera clubs a single, purpose-built system for managing membership, events, competitions, and galleries, replacing the fragmented, closing foliopic.com setup clubs relied on before. Wetherby & District Camera Club‘s own site builds directly on this platform via its API.
